University officials announced Friday that Dr. Wayne Dorothy, HSU Professor of Music and Director of Bands, would no longer serve as the director of HSU Bands.

Dorothy, who has directed HSU Bands since 2001, will continue his service to HSU as a faculty member through a newly created faculty position in HSU’s School of Music.

“We are thankful for Dr. Dorothy’s 17-year service in his role as Director of Bands and will immediately begin the search for a new full-time director of HSU’s prestigious and iconic band programs,” said Dr. Rob Tucker, Dean of HSU’s College of Fine Arts.

“The World Famous” Cowboy Band has been a staple of national and international rodeos and parades, presidential and gubernatorial inaugurations, and other community events since its founding in 1923. With its colorful western attire and trademark “cowstep” HSU’s Cowboy Band has delighted audiences far and wide with an engaging and entertaining style reflective of the spirit of the American West.

Steeped in more than 110 years of tradition, HSU’s Concert Band is the University’s oldest, and largest, musical ensemble. Members of this band include students representing a variety of majors across campus who participate in campus concerts as well as performances for various audiences both locally and across the Unites States.
